Course Description


This interactive course, delivered by legal officers from Nacro covers the main aspects of safer recruitment with particular focus on dealing with criminal record disclosure or allegation information, and conducting risk assessments on applicants or existing staff who have criminal records. Using real case studies as examples we give HR professionals the tools they need to carry out risk assessments and make recruitment decisions confidently and legally.

You will learn:

  • How to understand and apply the relevant legislation that impacts upon recruitment, including

    • o Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA)

    • o ROA Exceptions Order 1975 (as amended 2013)

    • o Data Protection Act 1998

    • How to determine what level of criminal record check is appropriate for the role

    • How to practically apply safer recruitment policies and processes

    • How to interpret and manage criminal record disclosure information to inform risk assessment process

    • How to gather other necessary information to carry out effective risk assessments on applicants, or existing staff and volunteers who have criminal records or have been subject to serious allegations

    • How to manage allegations that have been made against applicants or existing employees

    • How to carry out background checks, immigration checks, criminal histories, pre-employment health checks, employment history and references, policies, process and inclusion
